First impressions count, you have only one chance to get it right. No matter what your business, your goal is to bring in customers or clients. How do you maximize your time in front of these potential clients? By creating a good first impression – the “write” impression!
There are two main ways to reach out to your customers. The first way is in person, usually accomplished through business networking or social events. The second way is through the various forms of advertising – print ads, websites, mailings, and brochures.
Let us begin with personal contact. The importance here is to create a lasting impression. What is going to stand out about you and your business? It is imperative for you to exude confidence and approachability. Are you knowledgeable about your business? Can you present yourself in a memorable light? At networking events, you have 15 to 30 seconds to make an impact and set yourself apart from others in the room. Will you use your time well and be remembered? If you are not sure then it is time to polish up your act.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is not paying attention to everything they put in print. From business cards to flyers, brochures to advertisements, websites to corporate letters, all these items represent you to the world. Improper grammar, typographical errors, and poor use of spell check will leave potential clients wondering just how good you really are. They will not make the “write” impression.
Are your image and branding consistent across the board? Maybe it is time to reexamine your branding. Is your website easy to navigate and is it informative? Many times, a fresh set of eyes can notice things that are not clear to the general public. Have you thought about rolling out a new product or ad campaign? Define your target audience carefully to maximize your advertising dollars. If your business regularly hands out giveaways, how can you make yours stand out?
With so many companies competing for the same clientele it is important to get it “write” before you put it out there. Connect with someone who can help you polish your image and make a lasting impression the first time and every time after that. Remember, for a successful business you must always get it “write.”
